Cleves, February 2018 – Taylor High School has had an impressive year with academics and athletics, continuing to provide exceptional opportunities for the students of Three Rivers Local School District.

Most recently, Taylor High School Bowling Coach, Zach Horstman, was named the 2018 CHL Coach of the Year; a distinguished honor voted on by CHL peers. Mr. Horstman has been with the Taylor High School Bowling Program for three consecutive years and has made some dramatic changes. According to Athletic Director, Larry Herges, “he truly knows the game of bowling and how to strategize to stay one step ahead of his opponents.”

Zach is a semi-professional bowler who has brought his knowledge to the student-athletes of Taylor High School. This year, the boys’ team won the sectional championships; only the second time in school history. Additionally, they finished strong in the sectionals with a team total of 4,035 pins; they were the only team from the sectionals to have over 4,000 pins. Individual athletes also found success under the leadership of Coach Horstman this year with both, Senior Shawn Ward, and Junior Austin Harvey, being named The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Bowler of the Week. To end the season on a high note, the team headed to Dayton on February 22nd and subsequently finished 7th overall at Districts.

“Coach Horstman is a unique coach and uses his knowledge of the game to truly coach his players up,” states Larry Herges. Larry went on to add that, “there are many reasons I could think of that would qualify coach Horstman as a Coach of the Year, but taking on the girls’ team in addition to his boys’ definitely is one of the main reasons.” At the beginning of the season, Zach was made aware of five girls who were interested in bowling, but the program did not yet exist at Taylor High School. Not providing an opportunity for these girls was not an option for Mr. Horstman. So, he did what any great coach would do; he took on the role as girls’ bowling coach as well. As a result, one of the female bowlers, Emily Lawless, was named 1st Team CHL.

Under the leadership of Coach Horstman, the Taylor High School Bowling Team ended their season 2nd in the CHL.
