5th Grade Puppet Project Brings Scientists to Life

Posted on: September 8, 2025
Science Puppets

This week, our 5th graders at Taylor Middle School combined creativity, research, and performance in a truly unique way! Students were challenged to select a scientist who made a dramatic impact on the world of science—ranging across hundreds of years and a wide variety of fields. After researching their chosen scientist, students created a puppet (using ½-gallon containers as the base) to resemble their figure.

Once their puppets were complete, the real fun began. Students presented their research in character—using their puppets to “tell” the story of their scientist’s contributions and discoveries. The activity not only allowed students to dive deep into history and science, but also provided an engaging opportunity to practice public speaking, collaboration, and creativity.

A special thank you goes to Mrs. Davey for inviting us into her classroom to watch this project in action. It was clear how engaged the students were—not just in their own presentations, but also while learning from their peers.

One of the most memorable moments was watching students try to synchronize their words with their puppet’s mouth movements. Many times the puppet was “talking” even after the lips stopped moving—absolutely priceless and a reminder that learning can (and should!) be both educational and fun.

Projects like this highlight the many creative lessons happening every day at Taylor Middle School. They show our students that science is more than facts in a textbook—it’s about people, discoveries, and ideas that have shaped the world we live in today.
